How to hire an NSFW artist: where to find one and what to pay
To hire an NSFW artist, post the commission where adult work is allowed — an adult industry job board, F95zone's recruitment section, the art subreddits — with a fixed price per piece, a clear brief of the content and a written agreement that the rights pass to you. The big freelance marketplaces won't help here: both Fiverr and Upwork ban sexually explicit work. Over the last 90 days, 79 adult game studios posted artist and animator vacancies on Adult Job; below is what they offered, so you can see what you are competing with.
Why Fiverr and Upwork don't work for NSFW art
This is the first wall most people hit. Fiverr's community standards prohibit adult and sexually explicit content, AI-made included, and accounts that break the rule get suspended. Upwork's list of jobs that aren't allowed includes creating sexually explicit content. An NSFW order there can end with the artist's account banned mid-project and your money stuck in a dispute.
So the market lives elsewhere, and you have to go where the artists already are.
Where to find NSFW artists for hire
- Adult industry job boards. On Adult Job you can post a one-off task (a commission with a budget and a deadline) or a vacancy for a long project. Everyone reading it is fine with adult content, so you don't spend a week on polite refusals.
- F95zone. The forum's recruitment section is where adult game developers look for artists, writers and coders; many artists post their own "for hire" threads there too.
- Reddit. Subreddits for commissions, for Daz Studio and Blender artists, and for visual novel makers. Check each sub's rules: some allow NSFW requests only with a tag, some not at all.
- Artists' own channels. Many NSFW artists keep their commission sheet (prices, what they draw, what they refuse) on a personal site, Twitter/X or Patreon. If you like someone's style, ask there first.
What adult game studios offer artists
Our figures come from the adult game artist and animator vacancies of the last 90 days — 79 adverts, 74 of them still open. This is what other studios are putting on the table:
- Pay in numbers is rare. Only 21 of 79 adverts (27%) name any pay. An advert with a figure stands out simply by having one.
- Per piece or per project. 13 adverts give a price for the work itself. In US dollars, a quarter of them start at $100 or less, half at $1,000 or less, and a quarter at $1,000 or more — the low end is a single illustration, the high end a set of backgrounds or a whole project.
- Revenue share. 13 adverts offer a cut of future sales or Patreon income. Experienced artists mostly skip these: most adult games earn little, and a share of little is nothing.
- Style and tools. 7 ask for an anime style; Daz Studio is named 12 times, Blender 6, Live2D or Spine 3. 9 ask for a portfolio or an ArtStation link.
The practical takeaway: a clear brief with a real budget, even a modest one, already puts you ahead of most of the market.
How much does an NSFW commission cost
There is no fixed rate; the price depends on the artist's level and on what you order. The usual pricing units are:
- Per character — a sprite or a full-body character sheet, with extra for expressions or outfits.
- Per illustration or CG — the full scene, often priced by complexity: one character or two, a simple or detailed background.
- Per render for 3D artists in Daz or Blender, with a separate price for the scene setup.
- Per second of animation for animators, or per loop.
Ask for a written price list before you start. A good artist will tell you what changes the price (extra characters, revisions, a rush deadline) instead of naming one sum and adding to it later.
How to brief an NSFW artist
A vague brief is the main reason adult commissions go wrong. Put this in writing:
- What it is for — a visual novel, a 3D game on Patreon, banners for a creator's page — and where it will be published.
- The content, plainly. What is explicit, which themes or kinks are involved. Artists have lists of what they will and won't draw; let them say no at the start, not halfway.
- Format — size, resolution, file type, layered sources or not, how many variants.
- References — your characters, the style you want, examples you like.
- Price, deadline and revisions — how many rounds of changes are included.
- Payment terms — half upfront is the norm with a new artist; for a large job, pay by milestones.
All characters must be adults, and the brief should say so. Anything that suggests minors is illegal in many countries and will get your project rejected by every serious artist and store.
Who owns the art
This is where commissioning clients most often get caught. Under US law a commissioned work is a "work made for hire" only in certain categories and only with a written agreement signed by both sides — the US Copyright Office explains it in Circular 30. Without that, the artist may keep the copyright and you only get to use the piece. Before you put art into a game you sell, get a short written agreement that the rights pass to you (or exactly what licence you get), and keep it with the invoice.
Pay safely, keep the work
The same rules protect both sides as in any remote job in this industry — the patterns are in our article on how agencies short-change workers. Don't ask for a large free test piece: a short paid test is fair, a finished illustration for free is not. Keep the whole conversation and the agreed price in one chat. And if the project is a game, tell the artist where it will be sold: stores and payment providers have tightened their rules on adult content, which we described in adult game artist jobs.

Questions
Where can I find an NSFW artist for hire?
On boards made for the adult industry such as Adult Job, in F95zone's recruitment section, in art and visual novel subreddits that allow NSFW requests, and on artists' own commission pages. Fiverr and Upwork forbid explicit work.
How much should I pay an NSFW artist?
It depends on the artist and the piece. In the adult game adverts on our site that name a project price, half start at $1,000 or less. Ask for a price list per character, per illustration or per second of animation, and agree on revisions upfront.
Is a revenue share enough to hire an artist?
Rarely. 13 of 79 adult game adverts offered a share of future income; established artists usually want a fixed fee, at least for part of the work.
Do I own the art I commission?
Not automatically. Get a written agreement that transfers the copyright or describes your licence, especially if the art goes into a game or a product you sell.

How we counted
All vacancies on Adult Job from the last 90 days (79) for adult game artists and animators, open and closed. Prices come from each advert (the lower figure, US dollars only); revenue share, styles and tools are found by words in the text, so those figures are approximate. They are recounted every day.
