Adult game developer jobs are remote, small and mostly freelance: a team of two or three people making a visual novel or a 3D game funded on Patreon needs someone to script scenes in Ren'Py, build a Unity prototype, write branching dialogue or animate characters. Adult game programmer jobs: Ren'Py, Unity, Unreal
Many adult games are built by their founder alone, and a programmer is hired when the project outgrows that person: the code gets messy, players ask for an Android build, or the game moves from a visual novel to something with real gameplay.
The engines named in the adverts tell you what to learn first:
- Ren'Py — 18 adverts. The standard engine for adult visual novels: free, open source, scripted in its own simple language with Python underneath. Typical tasks are turning a writer's script into scenes, custom screens and menus, a gallery and save system, bug fixing between monthly releases, and Android and Mac builds.
- Unity — 10 adverts. Used for 3D games, sandbox and management games, and anything with real-time interaction. Expect C#, character controllers, UI and sometimes integration of animations made in Blender or Daz.
- Unreal — 3 adverts. Rarer, for teams going for realistic 3D.
A programmer with a small finished Ren'Py demo or a public Unity project on GitHub gets answers faster than one with only a CV. These teams can't check diplomas, but they can run your build.
Visual novel writer jobs
19 adverts are for writers: story and characters for visual novels and dating sims, branching dialogue, route planning, sometimes editing a founder's text written in a second language. Most of these games are sold to English-speaking players, so fluent English matters more than anything else.
Writers who can script their own scenes in Ren'Py are worth more to a small team: the text goes straight into the game without a programmer in between. If you write, learning the basics of Ren'Py's script format takes a weekend and opens more of these jobs.
NSFW animator jobs
10 adverts are for animators. Requests split into three kinds: 2D animation of characters (Live2D or Spine rigs over finished art — 3 artist and animator adverts name one of the two), frame-by-frame loops for scenes, and 3D animation in Blender (6 adverts name it) or Daz (13).
A showreel of short loops in the style the game uses — anime, semi-realistic, pixel art — matters more than the length of your experience.
How adult game development jobs pay
Only 22 of 109 adverts (20%) name any pay. Of those, 14 pay per task or project, 5 offer a monthly rate and 1 an hourly one. In the employment type, 24 say freelance or commission, 5 part-time and 6 full-time.
So the usual deal is a contract for a piece of work: a feature, a chapter of script, a set of animations, a monthly release. Developers on a long project sometimes get a monthly retainer. If the advert gives no figure, ask for a price per task or per month before you start — and for art, compare with what artists get in the artist jobs article.
Revenue share — a cut of future Patreon or store income instead of pay — comes up in these adverts too. Most adult games never earn much, so accept it only from a project that already has paying supporters, with the percentage and the payout schedule in writing.

8 adverts mention Patreon and 3 mention Steam. Most adult games live on monthly supporters, release a new build every month or two, and sell the finished game later. Before you join, look at the studio's Patreon: the number of paying supporters and how regularly builds come out tell you whether your invoice will be paid.
Store access for adult games tightened in 2025. Steam's onboarding rules for developers exclude content that may break the rules of payment processors, card networks and banks, including "certain kinds of adult only content". In July 2025 itch.io removed adult games from browse and search and paused Stripe payments for 18+ content. A studio that depends on one store, or just lost its payment provider, is a riskier client.
How to get hired and paid
- Show working code or finished scenes, not a list of skills: a demo build, a GitHub repository, a script sample, a showreel.
- Agree on scope, price and deadline in writing — in the chat is enough. Name the number of revisions.
- Split long work into paid milestones and take part upfront from a new client.
- Do a small test, not a free feature. An hour or two is normal; a week of work is not a test.
- Keep the source until you are paid — the project file, the rig, the script.
- Never pay to join a team or to buy a course from the studio.
Every legitimate studio makes games with adult characters only. If a brief hints at minors — "looks young", school settings with sex scenes — refuse. The same rules for spotting a bad employer apply as in agency scams against chatters.

There is no standard rate: most adverts pay per task or project and only 20% name a figure. Ask for a price per task or a monthly rate before you start, and treat a revenue share as a bonus, not as pay.
Can I work on adult games without drawing?
Yes. Programmers, writers, animators, sound designers and composers all work on these games. Artists are the largest group, but not the only one.
