Adult game artist jobs: who hires remotely and how they pay
Adult game artist jobs are almost always remote and almost always freelance: a small team behind a visual novel or a 3D game on Patreon needs character art, backgrounds or renders, and pays per piece or per project rather than a salary. Over the last 90 days Adult Job collected 109 vacancies from adult game teams; 76 of them were for artists, and 102 are still open.
That is a small market compared with chatting or webcam work, and it behaves differently. Below is what these adverts actually ask for, where they get posted, and how to tell a real commission from free work.
Who adult game studios hire
| Role | Adverts in 90 days |
|---|---|
| Artists (2D, 3D, pixel, backgrounds) | 76 |
| Writers (visual novels, dating sims) | 19 |
| Animators | 10 |
| Developers and programmers | 13 |
| Sound and music | 3 |
One advert can look for several people, so the rows add up to more than 109.
Artists dominate because art is what an adult game sells: the screenshots on its Patreon or store page, the character sprites, the CGs. Code and story are often done by the founder, art is what they can't draw themselves. A typical request is a character artist for a visual novel, a background artist, or a 3D artist who renders scenes in Daz Studio or Blender.
Remote NSFW artist jobs: where they are posted
Almost none of these jobs appear on ordinary job boards. Of the 109 adverts we found, 68 came from the recruitment section of the F95zone forum and 40 from Reddit communities for game developers, visual novel makers and Daz artists. Studios post where their players and other developers already are.
That has two consequences. First, the advert is usually a short forum post from one person, not a company page — so you check the project, not the brand: is there a playable build, a Patreon with real supporters, previous releases? Second, the same studio may repost the same request several times; we keep one copy.
How adult game art jobs pay
Only 22 of 109 adverts (20%) name any pay at all. Of those, 14 pay per piece or per project, 5 offer a monthly rate and 1 an hourly one. In the employment type, 24 say freelance or commission, 5 part-time and 6 full-time.
So the normal deal is a commission: a price per character, per background, per render or per batch. If the advert gives no number, ask for one before you send anything beyond your portfolio — "budget is negotiable" often means the budget is very small or comes as "revenue share".
Revenue share (a cut of future Patreon or sales income instead of payment) deserves a separate warning. Most adult games never earn much; a share of nothing is nothing. Take it only for a project that already has paying supporters, and only with the percentage written down.
What adult game studios ask for
- A portfolio with the style they need. Studios hire for a look: anime, semi-realistic, pixel art, 3D renders. NSFW samples help, but clean SFW work in the same style is usually enough to start the conversation.
- Tools. In the adverts, Daz Studio is named 13 times, Blender 6; for developers, Ren'Py 18, Unity 10, Unreal 3. Ren'Py is the standard engine for adult visual novels, so writers who can script in it get more offers.
- Patreon. 8 adverts mention Patreon directly — that is how most of these games are funded, by monthly supporters rather than one-off sales. A studio's Patreon tells you how much money really flows in.
- Comfort with the content. Adverts usually say which kinks or themes the game includes. Read that part before you apply; quitting mid-project is worse for both sides.
Every studio worth working with only hires adults and only draws adult characters. If anything in the brief suggests minors — "looks young", school settings with explicit content — walk away.
Why stores matter to your paycheck
An adult game studio lives on its store and payment access, and in 2025 that access tightened. Steam's rules for developers now exclude content that may break the rules of its payment processors, card networks and banks, naming "certain kinds of adult only content". In July 2025 itch.io removed adult games from browse and search and paused Stripe payments for 18+ content.
For a freelancer this means: before a long project, ask where the game is sold and how the studio gets paid. A game that depends on one store, or a studio that just lost its payment provider, is a risk that your last invoice won't be paid. Patreon-funded studios with a steady supporter count are the safer clients.
How to protect yourself
The rules are the same as for any remote job in the industry — we covered the patterns in how agencies short-change chatters:
- Agree on price, number of revisions and deadline in writing, in the chat.
- For a new client, take 30–50% upfront or split the work into paid milestones.
- Don't do a large free "test piece". A small sketch is normal; a finished illustration is unpaid work.
- Keep your source files until you are paid in full.
- Never pay a studio to "join the team" or buy a course.

Questions
Can I work as an adult game artist remotely?
Yes — practically all of these jobs are remote. The teams are small and spread across countries; what matters is your portfolio, your time zone overlap for calls and a reliable way to get paid.
How much do NSFW game artists get paid?
There is no standard rate: most adverts pay per piece or per project and only 20% name a number at all. Ask for a fixed price per asset before starting, and compare it with the time the piece takes you.
Do I need NSFW work in my portfolio?
Not always. Studios look for the right style first. Some ask for explicit samples to be sure you are comfortable with the content; keep them in a separate, age-gated portfolio.
Where else can I find adult game developer jobs?
Studios recruit on F95zone and in game development subreddits; Adult Job collects those posts in one place. Look through game developer and game writer jobs as well as art; what programmers, writers and animators are asked for is in adult game developer jobs.

How we counted
All vacancies on Adult Job from the last 90 days (109) in the adult games roles: artist, animator, developer, writer, sound — open and closed. Pay comes from each advert; tools and Patreon are found by words in the text, so those figures are approximate. They are recounted every day.
